âWell, they nearly all had blue pencils.â Daphneâs voice was filled with hushed excitement. âButââ
âBut hardly any were sharpened with a knife,â said George. âJust two out of the girls on my side of the room, in fact: Dorothea Canning and Geetha Amin.â
âAnd only one on mine,â said Daphne. âThe girl whose drawing Miss Deakins didnât like, Molly Fox.â
âSo, we have three suspects who use the same kind of pencil as the one we found.â George tapped his chin thoughtfully. âBut which one broke into Thanetâs cottage and tried to frame him?â
âHang on!â said Daphne. âWe havenât even proved anyone was in there, let alone that it was one of those three. And even if it was we canât just assume that they left the painting under his stairs.â
George waved away these ridiculous objections, mostly because he had no answer to any of them.
Daphne grabbed his arm and brought him to a halt. âYou canât just ignore these things, George,â she said. âI want Mr Thanet to be innocent too, but wanting it isnât enough. We need to look at the evidence coolly, and accept what it tells us. If you go assuming things just because theyâre what you want to believe then youâll end up putting your foot in it.â
George scowled at her, then a thought struck him. âPutting your foot in it!â he said, and smiled a big wide smile. âIâve had a brilliant idea!â
âOh dear,â said Daphne.
âNo, really. This is proper brilliant.â He glanced out of a window. âOh, but maybe itâs already too dark toââ He set off along the corridor, at what by his standards was quite a pace. âMeet me in the library after breakfast tomorrow,â he called back over his shoulder, still grinning. âIâll bring a clue.â
