‘Well, they nearly all had blue pencils.’ Daphne’s voice was filled with hushed excitement. ‘But—’

‘But hardly any were sharpened with a knife,’ said George. ‘Just two out of the girls on my side of the room, in fact: Dorothea Canning and Geetha Amin.’

‘And only one on mine,’ said Daphne. ‘The girl whose drawing Miss Deakins didn’t like, Molly Fox.’

‘So, we have three suspects who use the same kind of pencil as the one we found.’ George tapped his chin thoughtfully. ‘But which one broke into Thanet’s cottage and tried to frame him?’

‘Hang on!’ said Daphne. ‘We haven’t even proved anyone was in there, let alone that it was one of those three. And even if it was we can’t just assume that they left the painting under his stairs.’

George waved away these ridiculous objections, mostly because he had no answer to any of them.

Daphne grabbed his arm and brought him to a halt. ‘You can’t just ignore these things, George,’ she said. ‘I want Mr Thanet to be innocent too, but wanting it isn’t enough. We need to look at the evidence coolly, and accept what it tells us. If you go assuming things just because they’re what you want to believe then you’ll end up putting your foot in it.’

George scowled at her, then a thought struck him. ‘Putting your foot in it!’ he said, and smiled a big wide smile. ‘I’ve had a brilliant idea!’

‘Oh dear,’ said Daphne.

‘No, really. This is proper brilliant.’ He glanced out of a window. ‘Oh, but maybe it’s already too dark to—’ He set off along the corridor, at what by his standards was quite a pace. ‘Meet me in the library after breakfast tomorrow,’ he called back over his shoulder, still grinning. ‘I’ll bring a clue.’
